Ghana’s Mining in Motion Summit Secures Support from Key Leaders

The Mining in Motion Summit, set to take place from 2–4 June at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, will spotlight the contributions of artisanal and small-scale gold miners to local economic growth while reinforcing Ghana’s position in a stable global market.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti Kingdom Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Oheneba Kwaku Duah, son of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Managing Director of the Ashanti Green Initiative, recently met to discuss the forthcoming Mining in Motion Summit.

Their discussions centred on enhancing Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector and the role of government, international partners and major mining companies in driving its growth. Hon. Kofi Buah endorsed the event, highlighting its importance in connecting small-scale miners with technology providers, financiers, regulatory bodies and global industry stakeholders to improve efficiency and sustainability.

Organised by the Ashanti Green Initiative in collaboration with the World Bank, the World Gold Council and other international partners, Mining in Motion will be held under the theme Sustainable Mining & Local Growth – Leveraging Resources for Global Impact. The summit will bring together key decision-makers, including H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, alongside representatives from mining institutions in South Africa, the Republic of Guinea, the African Union, ECOWAS and the United Nations.

The three-day event will highlight the influence of traditional authorities in shaping ASGM practices, focusing on the sector’s contribution to employment and economic growth. In 2024 alone, Ghana’s artisanal miners generated $5 billion in foreign exchange earnings through gold exports. The sector provides direct employment for over one million Ghanaians and accounts for 35% of domestic gold production, reinforcing its pivotal role in the country’s socioeconomic development.

As Ghana’s mining industry increasingly aligns with sustainable development, the summit will showcase best practices for integrating ASGM into the global financial system. Representatives from leading international financial institutions will share insights on improving market access and financing opportunities for small-scale miners.

In a major step towards enhancing earnings for small-scale miners, Ghana has announced plans to establish a Gold Board, streamlining gold purchasing processes and facilitating access to global markets. Samuel Adu Gyamfi, recently appointed Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company and tasked with setting up the Ghana Gold Board, will play a crucial role in shaping discussions at the summit.

Through high-level panel discussions, deal signings, project showcases and exclusive networking opportunities, the Mining in Motion Summit will serve as a catalyst for industry-defining partnerships, connecting Ghanaian miners with regional counterparts and global investors.
