Gold Fields has submitted a lease-renewal proposal for its Tarkwa gold mine in Ghana, moving to secure the long-term future of one of its biggest operations after watching Ghana decline to renew the lease on its smaller Damang mine earlier this year.
Tarkwa produced about 427,000 ounces of gold in 2025 and stands as a cornerstone asset for the South African miner, with its current lease expiring in 2027. The stakes around that renewal have been sharpened by what happened at Damang in April, when Ghana’s government broke with its longstanding practice of routinely extending permits for existing operators and declined to renew the lease. The asset was subsequently awarded to local contractor Engineers & Planners (E&P), which has since begun production, a precedent that has put every foreign operator with an expiring lease in Ghana on notice.
The political backdrop adds further pressure. Some civil society groups and traditional leaders have called on the government, which has been implementing reforms aimed at boosting state revenue, to hand Tarkwa to local operators, even as officials have repeatedly said they remain committed to renewing the lease. Gold Fields said its proposal is built around boosting local participation, expanding community benefits and procurement opportunities and increasing the mine’s long-term economic contribution, positioning the pitch as an evolution of the operating model rather than a bid to preserve the status quo. The company submitted its formal lease renewal application in November 2025 and is now awaiting a government decision.
Gold Fields argues its financial strength, technical expertise and capacity to fund major reinvestment and mine-life-extension projects make it best placed to lead Tarkwa through its next phase, adding that continued operatorship would safeguard jobs, support local suppliers and sustain government revenues. Whether that argument prevails will say as much about the direction of Ghana’s resource nationalism as it will about Tarkwa’s own operational future, given the precedent Damang has already set.
