In a bold move to unearth not just precious metals but also widespread prosperity, Ghana is orchestrating a groundbreaking partnership within its gold mining sector. The nation is actively fostering collaboration between the often-contrasting worlds of artisanal and small-scale miners (ASGM) and the behemoths of large-scale mining (LSM), aiming to transform the industry into a powerful engine for job creation and sustainable economic growth.
This ambitious agenda will take centre stage at the upcoming Mining in Motion Summit, the country’s premier gathering for mining stakeholders, set to glitter in Accra from June 2nd to 4th, 2025. A key highlight of the summit will be a compelling panel discussion titled “Fostering Synergies Between ASM and LSM: Maximizing Gold Value Through Collaboration,” proudly sponsored by mining giant Newmont Africa. The session promises to bring together influential voices, including representatives from the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, the esteemed World Gold Council, and the regional powerhouse, the ECOWAS Chamber of Mines.
Spearheading this drive for unity is Ghana’s Minerals Commission, which is proactively tackling the thorny issue of land-use conflicts. Their innovative approach involves the strategic demarcation of specific zones for ASGM operations within or adjacent to existing large-scale mining concessions. This carefully planned coexistence aims to foster a regulated and peaceful environment for both sectors to thrive.
Furthermore, a wave of progressive initiatives is gaining momentum across the nation. Schemes such as the Community Mining Scheme and the World Bank-backed Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project are actively nurturing legal and sustainable practices among ASGM groups within designated areas. These forward-thinking programmes not only clamp down on the environmental scourge of illegal mining but also cleverly promote the shared utilisation of vital infrastructure, such as road networks, with LSM companies operating in the same regions. This pragmatic approach fosters efficiency and mutual benefit.
Ghana is also strategically prioritising open dialogue and the exchange of knowledge through multi-stakeholder platforms, with the Mining in Motion Summit serving as a crucial crucible for these interactions. The event will convene a powerful assembly of regulatory authorities, influential ASGM leaders, and major LSM players, including industry titans like Newmont Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, Emirates Gold, and Rand Refinery, alongside key representatives from the World Gold Council. These vital engagements are designed to ensure that the unique needs and perspectives of both small-scale and large-scale operators are seamlessly integrated into national mining policies and broader development strategies.
The 2025 edition of the summit is being orchestrated by the Ashanti Green Initiative, under the distinguished leadership of Oheneba Kwaku Duah, a Prince of Ghana’s esteemed Ashanti Kingdom. Hosted in close partnership with the influential World Bank and the globally recognised World Gold Council, the event will convene under the resonant theme: “Sustainable Mining & Local Growth – Leveraging Resources for Global Impact.” This powerful theme underscores Ghana’s commitment to aligning its mining ambitions with pressing global sustainability goals, while simultaneously championing inclusive economic growth that benefits all levels of society. The nation is betting big on the power of collaboration to unlock the full potential of its golden resources, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.
