Ambitious plans to accelerate the nation’s shift toward a cleaner energy future have put Bui Power Authority (BPA) at the forefront of the drive.
Joseph Nkrumah, Assistant Manager of Project Development (Renewables) at BPA, highlighted the company’s pivotal role in developing a diverse portfolio of green energy projects.
BPA has been tasked with contributing to Ghana’s goal of achieving ten percent renewable energy penetration.
According to Nkrumah, the authority is a “stronghold” for building renewable capacity, having expanded its mandate beyond its traditional hydro-power operations. The company is pioneering a hydro-solar hybridisation strategy, where solar power is used to augment supply during periods of hydro-power deficits.
The initiative includes a number of groundbreaking projects, such as Africa’s first floating solar power plant.
In addition, the authority is also exploring wind energy pilots and investing in battery storage to ensure grid stability. Nkrumah also noted the role of electric vehicles (EVs) in Ghana’s green transition, signaling a holistic approach to decarbonization.
These efforts are part of a broader trend across Africa, which now boasts over 20 gigawatts peak (GWp) of operational solar capacity. This achievement signals a significant acceleration in the continent’s transition toward clean energy, with Ghana’s initiatives serving as a model for other nations.
