Australia-based Atlantic Lithium has moved a significant step closer to developing Ghana’s first lithium mine, confirming on Wednesday that the mining lease for its flagship Ewoyaa Lithium Project has been submitted to the country’s Parliament for consideration and ratification. This parliamentary approval represents the final regulatory obstacle for the project, which is poised to become a key global supplier of spodumene concentrate for the rapidly expanding battery market.
The mining lease, which was originally granted in October 2023, now rests with the select committee on lands, forestry and mines. This committee is tasked with reviewing the terms of the agreement and subsequently making a recommendation to the full Parliament for or against ratification. The lease grants Atlantic Lithium the exclusive right to carry out mining and commercial production at Ewoyaa for an initial period of 15 years, with options for renewal under Ghanaian law.
With all necessary regulatory approvals now secured, including the environmental and operating permits, the final act of Parliamentary ratification is the last step in the project’s permitting process. Once approved, the company will be able to accelerate its funding and offtake arrangements, paving the way for the commencement of construction and development. The current Parliamentary session began on October 21, and Atlantic Lithium leadership expressed confidence that the ratification process would proceed smoothly and in accordance with due process.
Keith Muller, CEO of Atlantic Lithium, expressed optimism regarding the development, stating: “We are pleased to note that the Ewoyaa mining lease has been put to Parliament for consideration in the current Parliamentary sitting. We hope that ratification can swiftly follow, which will serve as a key catalyst for the financing and development of the project.” The Ewoyaa project is a central component of Ghana’s emerging lithium sector and is positioned to transition the West African nation into a vital source of material for the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.
