The Ghanaian government has lauded the Ghana Bauxite Company’s ambitious plans to construct a refinery, a move that signals a significant step towards value addition in the nation’s mining sector and promises to inject substantial economic growth into the region.
The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, commended the company’s decision, highlighting its alignment with the government’s vision of developing an integrated aluminium industry. “This refinery project will not only enhance the company’s operational efficiency but also create much-needed employment opportunities for the residents of Awaso and its surrounding communities,” he stated.
The minister’s remarks came during the opening of a Community Relations Office in Awaso, where he praised the company’s management for their substantial investments in improving operational performance since Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL) took over operations three years ago.
“Since Ofori-Poku Company Limited took over from foreign operators, the company has demonstrated remarkable growth and efficiency,” Brentum noted, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting indigenous businesses and reducing reliance on foreign investment.
Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of Ghana Bauxite Company, provided a historical overview of the company, which has been operating in Awaso since the 1940s. He highlighted the company’s significant expansion under OPCL’s leadership, including a substantial increase in its workforce and the acquisition of new equipment.
“Our employees are the lifeline of this business,” Gyedu stated, noting that the company’s workforce had more than doubled since 2022. He also detailed the company’s investment in new trucks and earth-moving machinery, which has led to a dramatic increase in bauxite haulage.
Furthermore, Gyedu outlined the company’s plans for future growth, including extensive exploration to assess bauxite reserves and the development of a new mining area.
Oyeadeeyie Basape Kojo Armah III, Paramount Chief of Sefwi Bekwai Traditional Area, praised the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, particularly the establishment of the Community Relations Office. He emphasized the positive impact of Ghanaian ownership on worker welfare and community benefits.
“The opening of this office is a testament to Ghana Bauxite Company’s dedication to social and community development,” he said.
