GNPC Explorco MD Showcases Ghana’s Oil Prospects at Accra Investor Briefing

The GNPC Exploration and Production Limited (Explorco)’s Managing Director , Michael Aryeetey, took centre stage at the Invest in African Energies: Accra Investor Briefing on 14 April 2025. Addressing a high-profile audience, Aryeetey outlined Ghana’s bold push for new oil discoveries, unveiling the country’s roadmap for upstream expansion.

With 17 oil and gas projects in the pipeline through 2027, Ghana is ramping up exploration efforts to stabilise markets, enhance output and attract fresh investment. Leading this charge, GNPC through Explorco has sharpened its focus on untapped hydrocarbon reserves, particularly in the onshore Voltaian Basin, where an exploration well is planned this year. Spanning 100,000 km², the basin represents Ghana’s next frontier, with GNPC investing $160 million in seismic surveys to map its potential.

Established to bolster Ghana’s upstream interests, Explorco has embraced a fast-track strategy to increase oil production and lure investors. Since rolling out its 2025 action plan in February, the company has advanced key international partnerships and accelerated drilling programmes. Ghana’s oil output surged by 10.7% in 2024, thanks to robust operations at the Jubilee South East project, spearheaded by Tullow Oil.

Energy giant Eni is also reinforcing its footprint in Ghana. In March 2025, Eni and GNPC strengthened their cooperation, targeting joint ventures, technology integration and local capacity building. Eni, in partnership with Vitol and GNPC, operates the Offshore Cape Three Points project, a key asset in Ghana’s energy mix.

The country’s offshore drilling agenda is gaining momentum, with multiple high-impact projects lined up. In May 2025, Tullow Oil will commence drilling one producer and one injector well at the Jubilee field. Meanwhile, a 4D seismic survey at Jubilee and the adjacent TEN field is set to optimise the 2025-2026 drilling campaign.

“Ghana presents a lucrative landscape for oil and gas firms. With Explorco at the helm, strategic alliances, cutting-edge technology, and a strong commitment to local content are paving the way for a competitive energy future,” underscored NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

Held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, the investor briefing serves as a prelude to the African Energy Week (AEW) in Cape Town this September. The event provides a gateway for investors to navigate Ghana’s evolving upstream market, regulatory shifts and infrastructure expansion plans.By fostering direct engagement between Explorco and key investors, the briefing is expected to unlock new partnerships and investment deals, propelling Ghana’s ambition to cement its status as a regional energy powerhouse.
